Description

60s Chicks Hit the Nineties. The women  include: Rose Beauchamp, who was the subject of a poem titled, ‘Golden Girl of the Sixties’; artist Miriam Cameron, who provides another angle on the story told by Tim Shadbolt in Bullshit and Jellybeans; Robyn du Chateau, who describes being brought up to be one style of woman and becoming something completely different; Maureen Kingi Waaka who was a 1960s Miss New Zealand; Dinah Lee who was the first New Zealand woman to have a hit record overseas, having two in Australia in 1964;

Furthermore, singer Linn Lorkin whose song At the Beach captured the childhood springboard of sixities ‘chicks’; Rosemary McLeod, who captured the style of New Zealand women in her cartoons and columns; Pamela Meekings-Stewart who was once a bunny girl and became a filmmaker; Irihapeti Ramsden, the major figure in the development of ‘cultural safety’ in nursing; Victoria Overton Taylor, a top model turned Hare Krishna devotee, and mediawoman Naomi Trigg.

In 60s Chicks Hit the Nineties, the women talk about the swift change wrought in the mid-sixties by the Beatles’ visit, the Vietnam War, the pill and other social factors. They explore the influence of feminism, the importance of female friendships and the realisation that their romances turned into unequal relationships, some liberating men from becoming the ‘good provider’ and becoming it themselves.
