Description

The book is made up of extracts from the recordings, in anecdotes and observations arranged in chronological order – to form a narrative. In effect, about 80 men tell the story of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force experience. Introductions to chapters give a context.

The men talk about training before war broke out, why they decided to join up, training in New Zealand, the voyage overseas and their experience of war. Gallipoli, the Western Front and the Sinai-Palestine campaign are all covered. Coming home, settling down and how they felt as the years past, including whether they suffered nightmares, attended Anzac Day ceremonies and talked to others about it are also covered.
